3 Ways to Wear That Diamond Dazzle

If you’re an Aries, you’re a bright, flashy spirit with a taste for simple excitement. If you’re a Taurus, you’re all about effortless, easy class and basking in traditional luxury.
But different as they are, these personalities share one April birthstone: that simplest and most luxurious of gems, the Diamond. And while the two may go together like oil and water, diamonds (and clear, simple stones like them) can be either girl’s best fashion friend. Looking to tune these classic stones to your own taste? Here’s a few ways you can shine:
1.     Bright as a Star … Just as the brightest stars can be seen from hundreds of light-years away, these brilliant Swarovski crystals, chunky bangles, and cascading earrings will set you apart from a crowd of hundreds. Styles like these make for the quintessential diva – the perfect look for an intense, self-assured Aries.
2.     Cool as Ice … This barely-there look may be understated, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t luxe. Exude a quiet yet cool confidence in crisp cuts set in clean silver lines and classic gold. They’re well-suited for that famous Taurean work ethic – with their polish and flawless taste, they add just the right touch to a professional ensemble.
3.     Sweet as Sugar … Okay, let’s say you don’t hold to this star sign silliness – you just want to look pretty. That’s simple enough. Show your flirty, feminine side with whispers of cz’s, tiny stone snowflakes, touches of pink, and pops of red.

Designer Spotlight: Shannon De Jong

In the Spotlight: Shannon De Jong
Two passions have ruled Shannon De Jong’s life: making jewelry and making rock ‘n’ roll. Between childhood dreams of joining an L.A. rock band, she’d rescue popsicle sticks and other odds and ends from a dead-end life of garbage, rejuvenating them into jewelry boxes, and later, actual jewelry.
Fast-forward to Now. After years of rocking out by night and collaborating with L.A. designers by day, her talents converged in ASTALI, a line of unconventional accessories with a bold, rebel edge. Her unique work is definitely turning heads: In the past few years, it’s popped up in music videos by Keri Hilson and Wisin & Yandel, plus issues of America’s Zink, Germany’s Sleek, and Japan’s Vogue. Now, we’re bringing it to you.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I get inspired by Natural History Museums - taxidermy, minerals, teepees - I love spending a day at the museum!  I also love spending a day at a flea market - not the big-city ones with vintage store prices, but rural places where you can actually find treasures and hear the history behind the antiques.
Sometimes when I'm feeling "designer's block," I just look around my studio at the objects I've collected over the years. They remind of the materials and aesthetics I'm naturally drawn to.
Is there any story to your materials or production process?
Yes, I use vintage subway and peepshow tokens to turn a collectable object into a wearable story. I never recast these pieces - only use the real thing!
And the interlocking snake glass beads in the Chevron Necklaces are actually trade beads made to mimic the movement of snake vertebrae.  The color patterns used in those necklaces were inspired by Native American textiles.
If you could only wear one piece of jewelry for a year, what would it be? That's easy because I usually wear the same pieces most days. :) I have two necklaces - a Zodiac Peepshow Token and a NYC Subway Token - that I wear together almost every day. And a Snake Vertebrae Bracelet that I've been wearing for over 15 years! Oh yeah, and my wedding band - I never take that off.

Best styling advice you ever received?
"It's best not to be totally in a trend or totally out of it." Also, "Wear your look, don't let the look wear you!"
Best business advice you ever received?
Make sure you can pay yourself fairly for your time. That's the difference between a hobby and a business.
As a designer, how do you like to see your pieces styled? Is there a type of person you have in mind when you design?
Sometimes, I'll think about a specific inspiring woman or man when I work on a collection - usually someone I know. But I like being surprised by my customers and I'm always excited to see how creatively they put things together. I'll see a woman and maybe I think, "This isn't her look." But then, I get to see her explore another facet of herself when she wears my pieces. It's a privilege to be part of that self-expression.
If you had to describe your style in five words or less, what would they be?
Androgynous, Sensual, Comfortable, Natural, Vintage.
What's your favorite spot for a design break?
My backyard! My studio is on my property, so it's easy to slip outside and have a drink under one of our citrus trees. Always birds chirping and flowers blooming - it's a happy place!
If I need to get away, I love Big Sur, CA.

Today's Mood: Classic Twist

Designer Spotlight: Jennifer Putzier

The Artist Behind Isette
Our mental image of the Victorian era is not always pleasant. Maybe you think about heavy ironwork, ornate baubles, and stuffy, restricted style. Maybe you hear a voice croaking out, “We are not amused.” Maybe you picture industrial factories and belching smokestacks. Chances are, though, you don’t picture any of these things in Jennifer Putzier’s line, Isette.
You might find that surprising, since she cites Victoriana as a major influence. And sure enough, you can find echoes of floral patterns and ironwork in her black acrylic designs, not to mention a love of intricacy. But Jennifer has a talent for stripping away all the period’s fussiness and leaving the bare essentials behind.
Despite its complexity, Isette’s stark color palette and perfectly-proportioned lines create the illusion of simplicity – Jennifer’s work may be detailed, but it never feels over-the-top. And with a pinch of light-hearted fun, she’s crafted a look that’s at once whimsical, classic, and wonderfully modern.=
Upper-class opulence aside, the late 1800s has a reputation for grunginess. With the start of the Industrial Revolution, pollution was at an all-time high. Thankfully, Jennifer is far more forward-thinking when it comes to the environment, as one of her favorite materials is bamboo, a fast-growing material that is easy to replenish and 100% sustainable.
Whether she’s renewing a classic style and using renewable resources, up-and-comer Jennifer Putzier is definitely one to watch.

Emerald City

Emerald: 2013 Color of the Year
Ah, emerald. It’s a resplendent hue, calling to mind one of the most luxurious gemstones; plus it flatters nearly all skin tones, brings out the best in every eye color, and compliments both feminine and masculine styles. Is it any wonder that Pantone, pre-eminent authority on pigmentation, named it 2013’s Color of the Year?
So what does that mean for fashion? Prepare to see a lot more green – that is, if you haven’t already. Deep green Gucci details began to catch eyes in Fall 2012, and with fantastic pieces following from Oscar de la Renta, Hussein Chalayan, Michael Kors, and Zac Posen, it was an unmistakable fact that Emerald was gaining momentum in the fashion world.
Looking for ways to flaunt that emerald hue? Like we said, it looks great with so many colors. Frame rosy pink, ruby red, or dark wine make-up with a deep green choker or earrings. Add a lush and natural air to neutral browns. Color-block it with cyan or blue for a look that’s at once bright and soothing. Or, play up its rich jewel tone with hints of gold for a look of luxury. But no matter what you do, get ready, for this is a year that will live in Emerald infamy.
